Secure Clipboard History: Expiry, Encryption and Deletion Explained
What "encrypted", "expired" and "deleted" really mean for a cloud clipboard history, including the limits of each.
A secure clipboard history keeps items only as long as you choose, encrypts them at rest, and lets you delete them at any time. Know the limits: server-side encryption means the provider can decrypt content, deleted data may persist briefly in backups, and text already copied onto a device stays there until replaced.
Expiry
Items in MyClipCloud expire after the period you choose (1, 7 or 30 days; 7 by default). Expiry is checked every time history is read, so an expired item disappears immediately even before the cleanup job removes it from the database. Pinned items stay until you unpin them.
Encryption
- In transit: HTTPS for every request.
- At rest: each item is encrypted with an authenticated cipher (XChaCha20-Poly1305) and bound to its owner and record.
- Who holds the keys: the service. That is server-side encryption, not end-to-end encryption; we say so plainly.
Deletion
When you delete an item or clear your history:
- It disappears from your history and from every device at once.
- It is permanently removed from the database by a scheduled job shortly after.
- Backups that contained it expire on their own schedule.
What no service can do
Once text is on a device's own clipboard, it stays there until that device copies something else. No website can reach in and erase it.
