Clipboard sync
Clipboard sync between devices: what works in a browser
A technical but plain-English look at how browser-based clipboard sync works and where its boundaries are.
Browser-based clipboard sync works while the syncing website is open. It saves what you copy inside the site and, in Chrome and Edge, what you copied in other apps when you return to the tab. On your other devices it puts the new item on the clipboard when the tab is in front. With no tab open, a website cannot sync โ on a computer, MyClipCloud's free Chrome extension does that part.
The pieces involved
- Copy events. The page listens for
copyinside its own editor and reads the selected text. In Chrome and Edge, once you allow clipboard access, it also reads the clipboard when the tab gains focus, to pick up what you copied elsewhere. - A private API. The text is sent over HTTPS to your account, encrypted at rest and assigned an ordered sequence number.
- Delivery. Signed-in sessions get a notification over a WebSocket where the server provides one, or check for new events every few seconds otherwise. Both paths use the same ordered event list.
- Catch-up. A device that was offline asks for everything after the last sequence it saw, so nothing is missed or applied twice.
- Local clipboard. A new text or photo is written to the device's clipboard when its MyClipCloud tab is in front. Where the browser blocks that, Copy latest does it with one click.
Supported browsers
The intended targets are current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, Chrome on Android, and Safari on iPhone and iPad. Each browser has its own permission behaviour for reading the clipboard; see the table on the home page.
