Troubleshooting Browser Clipboard Permissions in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox

Copy or paste buttons not working on a website? How clipboard permissions work in each browser and how to fix common problems.

Short answer

Clipboard buttons fail most often because the page is not on HTTPS, the page is not focused, the action was not triggered by a click, or a read permission was denied. Make sure the tab is active, click the button directly, and check the site permissions in your browser settings if reading is blocked.

Quick checklist

  1. Is the site on HTTPS? The Clipboard API requires a secure context (MDN).
  2. Is the tab active and focused? Click inside the page first.
  3. Did you click the button directly? Writing to the clipboard needs a user action.
  4. Was a permission denied earlier? Reset it in the site settings.

Chrome and Edge

Reading the clipboard shows a permission prompt. If you blocked it, click the site information icon in the address bar, open site settings and set Clipboard to Ask or Allow.

Firefox

Recent versions show a small Paste confirmation when a page asks to read the clipboard. Older versions may not support reading at all; writing on a click works.

Safari (macOS, iPhone, iPad)

Reading shows a Paste confirmation near the button you tapped. Tap it to allow that one read. Writing works when triggered by a tap or click.

In MyClipCloud

  • Copy latest falls back to showing the text selected so you can press Ctrl+C or long-press to copy.
  • Paste from device is optional; normal Ctrl+V or long-press paste into the scratchpad always works.
