How to Copy and Paste Between Two Computers: What Works in a Browser

The practical ways to move text between two computers, what a browser can do on its own, and when you need other tools.

Short answer

The simplest browser-only method is a web clipboard you sign in to on both computers: paste the text on the first computer, copy it there, then open the same site on the second computer and copy it out. Browsers cannot sync your whole system clipboard automatically โ€” that needs installed software.

The options, from simplest to most automatic

  1. Email or chat it to yourself. Works everywhere, but clutters your inbox and is slow for repeated snippets.
  2. A web clipboard such as MyClipCloud. Sign in on both computers. Text you copy inside the site appears on the other one; one click copies it locally.
  3. Your operating system's own feature. Some systems sync the clipboard between devices signed in to the same account when both support it.
  4. A dedicated desktop app. Captures every copy and can update the other computer automatically, but must be installed on both.

Why a website can't do everything

Browsers are designed so that a web page:

  • only sees copy events inside its own focused page (MDN: copy event),
  • cannot read your clipboard without a permission prompt or paste confirmation, and
  • can only write to the clipboard after you click or tap something (MDN: Clipboard API).

Those rules stop malicious sites from stealing what you copy. They also mean a web tool always needs one small action from you on the receiving computer.

Step by step with MyClipCloud

  1. Open MyClipCloud on computer A and sign in (email and password, or Google).
  2. Turn on automatic sync when asked.
  3. Sign in with the same account on computer B.
  4. On A, paste your text into the scratchpad, select it and press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac).
  5. On B, click Copy latest, then paste where you need it.

Which should you choose?

If you move text occasionally, or use computers where you can't install software, a browser clipboard is the lowest-effort option. If you want every copy synced with no clicks at all, look at a native tool and check what access it needs.
